You should buy it after your phase boots, dagger and bm. And also, you need it before 30 mins and have atleast nearly 80 duel dmg.

Its purpose is for solo pickoff and effectively roam faster. Having it early and having decent damage before sb(like 80+ duel dmg) will help you kill solo split pushers and afk junglers easily.

You dont really need to hit him for the extra +175 backstab dmg if you're planning to kill heroes with reliable escape (AKA AM, Storm and other escape heroes) to duel the enemy hero right away. I

Its better to find the right spot(like hiding in the trees or fog) than position yourself beside him. Why?
Because if you find the right position, you can check if he had backup(assuming there are no sents) and precast your combo (Press the attack then Blademail in the trees then Blink to Duel) if you're against escape heroes.

If your opponents have split-push heroes that you need to pickoff it's a fine option after blademail.

or youre playing against a hero that has a blink/aoe stun and if you are half of second late to duel you get rekd. so you duel out of invisibility so he doesnt have any time at all to possibly react to your blink.

That's not how dota works. One item does not apply to every situation.

If you buy blink on legion you're building wrong in like 10% of the games.

Get SB if you go 4-1-1-1 build. Backstab attack from sb + 1st = auto dead hero

its like you get phase boots, after that either sb or blink, and later the other one (so now you have phase, sb, blink) unless you need blademail to kill people (there always are games when blademail doesnt actually help win duel, like vs tinker enigma, any suppert, etc; its just hard to actually duel these guys)...

sb isn't that bad lategame, it can win u some fights especially if they don't expect it, and sometimes u need break.

i always buy shadow blade and have 60% win rate with legion, at 4600 mmr currently.
it is mentioned correct, that it helps you solo pick of enemies. at the early levels, damage + attack speed is good enough buff to be able to solo duel kill most heroes, and i find blink very situational, only if enemy has gem.

when playing with shadow blade, you just have to have common sense - do not go highground without vision, care to walk into traps etc, other than that its great item, great both for your farm and killing potential.
