Try to watch the video of miracle playing anti-mage you will get a lot of tips there. Starting item depends on the opponent and building situational item and what you need is map presence when you are playing AM

u should have atleast bfury manta and abyssal by 30mins

Push lane until it's unsafe/enemy tp, then go jungle as you make your way over to push another lane. This is the farming pattern for every hero in the game, AM just does it faster and you can push the wave deeper as you are safe vs most ganks unless they bring 3+ heroes which is really obvious if you aren't terrible.
