Sounds like tuna. I'd probably eat it with crackers and cheese or on a sandwich or something.

Just enough salt is used to prevent the raw fish from rotting (chemical decomposition). A fermentation process (which converts sugar to acids, gases, and alcohol) of at least six months gives the lightly-salted fish its characteristic strong smell and somewhat acidulous taste.
When opened, the contents release a strong and sometimes overwhelming odour; the dish is ordinarily eaten outdoors. According to a Japanese study, a newly opened can of surströmming has one of the most putrid food smells in the world, even more so than similarly fermented fish dishes such as the Korean Hongeohoe or Japanese Kusaya.[1]
There are videos in youtube of people's reactions to opening a can of surtrömming and trying some.
Makes me happy to live in the land of dota2 eternal scrubyness and paradise of food. Fuck it Hákarl.

" You open it under water in a bucket, to stop the gases from aerosolising in the air, and then take it out and get rid of the juices the fish is swimming in. Eat on crisp bread with some red onions, potatoes, and sour cream. It's quite tasty."
I think this kind of foods come from a time when food was both scarce and pretty shitty to begin with. Preservation processess make something edible last longer, so they used that, but we all know that preserved food is 90% of the time shittier than the fresh stuff.
So, when you take already crappy food and preserve it...
omg i saw the SURSTRÖMMING in youtube :D. Laughed so hard thx havoc, sad no one recorded you :)
I'm sorry Havoc. Hope this didn't influence you.

You sound like a smart guy. I thought you would at least Google it before you bought a can.
my sister just moved from San Francisco to Copenhagen and she loves it but did say the food sucks in comparison. The only thing she said that's above average are the bakeries. Even the beer market is completely dominated by carlsberg (which I like but hey)
Sutrömming is fucking awesome (blixte gott köp det och ät det i bilen ni kommer älska det) buy it for the drive throu.
Havoc please , you are suposed to open it in like a pan filled with water. else it will stink as ****.
